[Familial connections are outside of her usual realm of experience, but nicknames are normal enough, so she'll take it in stride. Trust is also very important.
Once she's satisfied with examining the room (again, not much to see), she sets her Leaf down on an empty space (whatever table is closest) and crouches down next to the sofa, patting down on the empty cushion and brushing her hands over the fabric. Couch... she's never touched a couch before.]
[ Watching her investigate their surroundings helps give him a bit more insight into what he may have to teach her in the future. He stows each piece of data away to analyze later. ]
You can sit down.
[ It isn't particularly cold inside, but Cale offers her one of the blankets. He is something of a snob when it comes to the quality of his sleeping and napping products, so it's incredibly soft to the touch. ]
[She accepts the blanket, taking a few moments to pat and pet it as well, marveling quietly at the softness. Her outfit has always been soft and fluffy looking (Ann even wanted to floof it! whatever that means) but blankets are also new. After that pause, she drapes it around herself like a hood and flops down onto the couch, legs idly kicking.]
It's warm and soft. I like it.
[Her body isn't exactly 'real' and the temperature is nothing compared to the Sapporo Jail, but it's still nice.]
To some people it is. [ He shrugs a bit. ] Making sure I have the best quality items I can get is important to me. For Regis, he's the type of guy who likes the high quality stuff but isn't extremely picky. He's a bit hopeless that way without his wife.
I see. Okay. [Internal personnel files updated!] Thank you for letting me use your important thing. If you want it back, please tell me at once. I can't be hurt by the cold.
It isn't that the item is important to me, just that the quality of what I buy is the best. It would be annoying if the blanket was ruined but not a big deal since I can get it fixed or replaced.
[Just as Cale finishes speaking, there is a soft knock and the door opens. Regis isn't expecting anyone else but the redhead to be there, so he starts speaking as soon as he enters the door.]
You would not believe how many people-
[His words drop off as he realizes there is someone else in the apartment, a young someone at that. The serious expression on his face fades into something more pleasant and welcoming, though also a little puzzled.]
Why hello, there. My name's Reggie. I didn't realize Cale was going to have one of his "children" visiting.
[While still confused, especially by the "humanity's companion" comment, Regis tries to take things in stride, though that's a little harder to do with them both looking at him and Cale being Cale and not saying a word.]
Do I need to speak with Noctis? [He's serious for all of a second before explaining.]
Noctis is my son who also happens to be here, but something tells me he's not responsible for that form of address. That's all right, though. I don't mind. [Stay as silent as you want, Cale. He knows you're guilty, but you're also right.]
Do you mind telling me what you mean by "humanity's companion?" I dare say, I've not heard the phrase before.
I have not met anyone named Noctis. If you prefer another name, I can use it instead.
[A brief darting of her eyes towards Cale pretty much confirms Regis' suspicions, though. Definitely the source. Anyway:]
It is the directive I was given when I woke up. "Be humanity's companion". I'm an AI designed for this purpose! If there's anything you need, you can ask me.
[ He reaches out and gives her a reassuring pat. ]
Sophia is also a person who is the equivalent of fourteen years old, and supposed to prioritize learning and assisting people around her age instead of adults.
[ That contemplative look crosses his face again and he directs his next words to Sophia. ]
[An AI? So she's like Theta? But, Regis is pretty sure that Theta can only appear as a hologram, not a full person. Maybe it has to do with this role she's been given?]
Cale is right, I really don't mind. It's much better than being called "Your Highness" or "Your Majesty" all the time. [Regis has a lot of questions he would like to ask her, but Cale's question stops him in his tracks. Instead, he just gives his friend a strange look. Where, exactly, had that question come from?]
Okay, I'll remember it. [Another personnel update! And she follows Regis's gaze to look at Cale.] I don't know what that means.
[She isn't?? Parent and child relationships also seem very complicated. But Cale talks a lot about what she wants, rather than what he wants, which is weird for her. She's not here for what she wants. But he never asks for anything!]
Do you want a guardian or parent? [ Cale ignores the strange look from Regis. ] An adult you can always go to with any questions or worries, and who will make sure you can grow up safely and happily.
[While Cale's speaking, Regis finally sets down the couple things he'd traded for at the market and then comes all the way into the living room and takes a seat in the chair he usually uses when he's at the apartment. With as often as Cale naps on the couch, Regis has given up on using it.]
Cale may or may not be missing his own kids, but either way, it is good to have an adult you can turn to if you need to, even if you are meant to help humans yourself. What you call them really doesn't matter that much.
[Adults are so fussy and confusing... she never had this problem with Zenkichi. Or any of the Phantom Thieves for that matter. If they needed help they asked her, and it felt good to be helpful. She learned so many important things that way. This is... again, that BZZT feeling she had with them any time they acted against what she'd expected. She doesn't get it at all.]
I don't need anything like that. All I need is to help.
[No one is giving her orders, though. It's really hard.]
Incorrect. You also need to learn and grow, which will help you help others. The way humans grow is under the care of one or multiple adults who teach and guide them throughout their lives.
[ Cale wishes he could meet whoever programmed Sophia and threw her away. ]
Whatever you decide, I already promised I would teach you and so I'll teach you.
[Regis' eyes dart between them for a moment because there is so much he knows he's missing, but hopefully Cale will fill him in later. In the meantime, he has an idea he would like to try out.]
You know, Sophia, we've just met, but I think I do know a way you can help me if you really want to. I love fishing as a hobby, but I've never really had time to explore more of them on my own. Do you think you could find one you like to do and then teach me how to do it? It would be really helpful.
[Sophia is quiet for a long moment while Cale finishes and Regis looks at them both, struggling once again to process. She can't re-prioritize her commands or her code, she can't subtract, only add and make minor adjustments. She can learn and grow, but what she wants... what she wants is...
But then Regis says the magic words, and she practically lights up. Like a broom sweeping away all her rising existential anxiety, or a defragmentation process at work.]
Okay! I can help with that. I'll find all kinds of hobbies. Would you like another water-related hobby? I enjoy water, and fish.
[ Cale feels conflicted as he sees the way Sophia's demeanour immediately changes. He doesn't like seeing her anxious, but there is something unsettling about witnessing the way her programming kicks in. Seeing how easily she obeys someone she just met makes him worry.
He says nothing further for the moment, instead turning to look at Regis. The man is observant enough that Cale knows he must have picked up on the thing he finds so concerning. ]
[Regis does catch Cale's eye just long enough to give him a "Trust me" look and then he focuses back on Sophia. The way she immediately brightened up isn't quite as concerning to him because he's seen behavior like it before, though as much as people might have joked about Cor being "programmed," he wasn't. He was just stuck in very ingrained patterns of thought and behavior. It took small steps and patience to help him work through it, and Regis hopes the same will work for Sophia.]
If you like water and fish, then why don't we start there? We can always look for more hobbies in other areas together after that. One can never have too many and here a lot of us finally have the time to enjoy them.
[Sophia nods along, still eager, though Cale being so quiet doesn't go unnoticed. She glances sidelong at him a few times, waiting to see if she's displeased him.]
I'll look into more water hobbies right away. This was much faster when I lived in a phone... I can't search the internet here, so I may have to ask around.

Of course. I only like the warmest, softest blankets. You won't find anything less than the best here.

Hello! You are Uncle Reggie. [Directive met!] I am not anyone's children, I am Sophia, humanity's companion.
